Description of dive:

Training: Dusty's Advanced OW Boat dive, Omar's final OW certification dive

Comments: Not a lot at the cement barge. Nice wreck, with swim-through stern. Saw a few parrot fish, a grunt or two. Found and raised a folding chair. Transits taken on site, straight out harbor to right of hotel, white styrofoam marker a couple hundred meters offshore between two mosques. Looking right toward hotel, two towers, the shorter one just right of the taller. Looking left toward Dubai, a towering structure lines up just beneath a rectangular depression in Dubai skyline.

Surface interval duration: 1:07

Description of dive:

Training: Omar's first and Dusty's final Advanced Open Water dives: Navigation

Comments: Pretty poor vis, reef structure very disorienting. We carried 30 m. line and a buoy. Tied line to anchor and counted fin kicks over measured 30 m. distance, then tied line and buoy on reef blocks. Returned to anchor along line and took time, then verified on return to buoy. I'd set both boys separate square pattern tasks; on reflection should have had them do it together (square as buddy team, team locates starting point). In any event, I left weighted objects at points on square, and thus had two plotted squares emanating from buoy. Dusty lost the buoy on completing his square, probably because he stopped counting kicks (I was at 16 of 21) when he saw the reef and we went searching for origin in wrong direction. Ended up surfacing, and swimming to buoy and descending there. I told the boys to buddy and compass to a weight I'd left due west, then eyeball to reef, swim over reef, notice features, and return to the weight. This we did, then compassed back to the buoy. Finally, we did a 45 degree swim to retrieve a weight I'd left midway through the first square and returned to buoy, on compass. We saw a turtle on the dive. Kick cycle data: I took 21 kicks and 50 sec. to go 30 meters; Dusty 20 kicks and 60 sec.
