There is a free Virtual Strand,
http://www.asszisztencia.hu/eurocall/index.php?c=121
including a Pre-Conference Workshop (PCW) on Second Life and Lively, 3
September 2008. You can find the description of the workshop at
http://www.asszisztencia.hu/eurocall/index.php?c=92
under W11/Second Life and Lively by Google. . In preparation for the PCW,
Graham Davies has created a Word document that explains the preparation you
need to do in advance of the workshop and what will be covered in the workshop.
The document can be downloaded from the ICT4LT website, Section 14.2.1 of

- ANTWERP CALL 2008 XIIIth International CALL Research Conference
30 August - 2 September 2008
http://www.ua.ac.be/main.aspx?c=.CALL2008
Practice-Based & Practice-Oriented CALL Research Programme Committee: Jozef
Colpaert, editor; Mike Levy, Phil Hubbard and Wilfried Decoo, associate editors
of the CALL Journal (Taylor & Francis) Scientific Committee: The editorial
board of the CALL Journal Organizing Committee: LINGUAPOLIS, Institute for
Language and Communication at the University of Antwerp Conference Host: Ann
Aerts, LINGUAPOLIS Venue: University of Antwerp City Campus (Stadscampus) In
general, the Antwerp CALL conferences focus on research topics and issues in
CALL. The theme for the 2008 conference was inspired by the many reactions,
questions and suggestions we have been receiving since our 2006 conference: -
how to integrate research findings in practice; - how to evaluate this
integration afterwards; - how to integrate practice-orientation in research
design; - how can practice contribute to research or be considered research; -
how to publish about CALL practice. CALL Practice includes activities like: -
selection, integration and evaluation of ICT in language learning and
instruction; - courseware design and development; - test development and
administration; - teacher training; - project management. Proposed topics may
be narrowly defined, such as the analysis of learner language, data gathering
(tracking and logging), interactive whiteboards, NLP-routines, corpora and
concordancers, speech recognition and pronunciation training, listening
comprehension or vocabulary acquisition. You are invited to present your
current work and to highlight aspects relevant to the conference theme.
Accepted presentations will be rated and classified into three categories: -
plenary presentations (30 minute presentations); - parallel presentations (20
minute presentations); - panel sessions (10 minute presentations followed by
group discussion). Selected papers will be published in the CALL Journal. The
Antwerp CALL Conferences are small-scale conferences where CALLers meet
colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere, where doctoral students participate in
discussions with senior researchers - a jump start - and where everyone can
have a drink afterwards in one of the many cozy bars in the bustling city
centre. Antwerp CALL 2008 can be easily combined with AILA2008 (www.aila2008.org)
and Eurocall 2008 (http://www.asszisztencia.hu/eurocall/)
in Hungary.

Presenters: Marguerite Ann Snow and Donna Brinton Date: Wednesday, May 21,
2008 - Overview: Content-based instruction (CBI) is the integration of
selected content with language teaching aims. Applicable to both ESL and EFL
instructional settings, CBI is a flexible approach that is constantly evolving.
This seminar provides descriptions of current models of CBI, discusses the
similarities and differences between CBI and ESP, and presents several case
studies of CBI implemented in both ESL and EFL classes. In this seminar,
participants consider * how the models may be implemented with adolescent
through adult learners * which proficiency levels are most appropriate for CBI
* which issues and challenges exist to effective implementation * what outcomes
can be expected in terms of student learning and motivation For complete May 21

- TESOL's May 2008 virtual seminar - Grammaring Presenter: Diane
Larsen-Freeman Date: Wednesday, May 7, 2008 - Overview: Teaching grammar
often means giving students grammar rules and then having students practice the
rules in drills and exercises. Students do learn about grammar this way, but
they don't necessarily learn to use it for their own communicative purposes.
Grammaring is a dynamic process. It is what enables ESL/EFL students to use
grammar structures accurately, meaningfully, and appropriately. In this Virtual
Seminar, we will learn about grammaring, how it is learned, and how to teach
it. For complete May 7 seminar program and registration information, go to

- iicall2 2007 Interfaces of Intelligent Computer-Assisted Language
Learning University of Waterloo, 7-8 December 2007 Research in
Intelligent Computer-Aided Language Learning (ICALL) integrates natural
language processing into a computer-assisted language learning environment. For
such research to be innovative, successful and sustainable, it arguably needs
to combine linguistic modeling, second language acquisition research and
insights from foreign language didactics with representations and computational
linguistic algorithms capable of integrating the information from these models.
The iicall2 will explore these interfaces of ICALL. Information about the
conference is available at http://www.purl.org/i-call. The

CALL FOR PAPERS AND INVITATION TO REGISTER Theme: Behind the hype and
the unrealistic expectations surrounding e-learning, there is a genuine global
expansion of online teaching and learning. And given the importance of
interactions in both a cognitive and a socio-cultural model of second language
acquisition, it is no surprise that language teachers have been pioneers in
using computer-mediated communication. This seminar will create a space for
in-depth discussion and reflection about an area that is newly established and
growing but as yet little researched: spoken online language learning. Drawing
on theoretical expertise from the invited researchers, we expect to explore and
address what is emerging as the major issue for oral learning of languages and
cultures online: technologies have been developing faster than pedagogical and
methodological reflection and practice is often still characterized by a
trial-and-error approach.
Objectives: * To develop a shared
understanding of a new disciplinary area drawing on a range of domains * To
address major issues for oral learning of languages and cultures online * To
address the limitations of existing pedagogical parameters for spoken online
learning and teaching * To re-evaluate theoretical paradigms underpinning
research in spoken interaction * To examine and extend the repertoire of

- LEARNING THROUGH ONLINE EXCHANGES: TOOLS, TASKS, INTERACTIONS,
MULTIMODALITY, CORPORA GRENOBLE , France , 7 to 9 June
2007 http://w3.u-grenoble3.fr/epal/index.htm
The conference focuses on online learning and teaching, both at distance and
blended, and its core theme is online interaction. Based on the
socio-constructivist assumption that learning is an eminently social
phenomenon, our view is that human interaction has to be at the centre of the
online educational process. However a great many courses fail to take
sufficient account of online interaction. As a report on e-learning at tertiary
level in France has shown, production and delivery of digital resources are all
too often given priority over pedagogical communication and support. Yet today
information and communication technologies can facilitate certain types of
shared practices that may be easier to set up and to support than in a face to
face situation. Among these are small-group or whole-class peer activities,
discussion and debate, and cooperative or collaborative production. These
shared practices form the focal point of the conference. They are articulated
into several strands, designed to examine how they are mediated by tools, how
different tasks may trigger different forms of exchange, how they may be
supported by teachers, what methodologies may be used to collect, archive and
analyse their digital traces, and last but not least what epistemological
issues they raise. Papers on networked-based language learning and teaching,
including teacher training, are expected to feature large in the conference
slots but contributions about interactive online learning within other
discipline areas are also welcome, the criterial aspect being online
interaction. Submissions are invited in to the following six strands. ·
selection, use and impact of tools on interactions, affordances; · tasks
and types of exchanges, communication scenarios, different aspects of shared
learning; · role of the teacher in fostering interaction and learning,
in developing learner autonomy, in evaluating outcomes; · online
interactions from the learners point of view: the socio-affective,
socio-cognitive and socio-cultural dimensions, establishing the social bond;
· methodologies for analyzing interactions (including multimodality);
· structuring and sharing corpora of learner data. The conference is
pluridisciplinary: language learning and teaching research, education and
educational technology, information and communication research, cognitive
sciences and tool design for computer-based learning. Official languages:
French and English. All papers will be published online. Authors will be
invited to submit their papers for publication in a refereed publication,
online or print-based (to be confirmed).

- Voyaging into a new decade! TCC WORLDWIDE ONLINE CONFERENCE
April 17-19, 2007 Pre-conference dates: April 3-4, 2007 BLENDING
REALITY AND MULTIMEDIA IN UBIQUITOUS LEARNING Homepage:
http://tcc.kcc.hawaii.edu INTRODUCTION.
E-Learning is passé. U-learning is the new wave globally in higher
education. Ubiquitous learning encompasses e- learning and emphasizes learning
anytime, anywhere and anyway in both formal and informal lifelong learning
environments. As u-learning and Web 2.0 technology evolve, social interaction,
intercultural communications, and global collaboration increases in importance.
Social networking and learning communities are integral components of
u-learning. Through online social networks, young adults today gain a sense of
community that is important in their daily and social life. How can we learn
from this? How can we learn from our students? What is the status of social
networking (Facebook, Mixi, etc.) and online learning communities today? Have
they succeeded or have they withered away? How can we complement our students'
prior experiences with interacting socially online? How can we assess learning
in this new environment? Will mobile phones become synonymous with u-learning
as proponents advocate? How do we train faculty and staff and engage them to
support productive learning communities? Will learning communities help bridge
the Internet divide? How do we "feed and weed" effective learning communities
or social networking systems in the U-learning era? Will virtual worlds such as
Second Life become a new learning environment?
THEME. TCC will offer
papers and presentations on the evolution, trends, successes, or failures of
learning communities and social networking systems in higher education. The
coordinators, however, are interested in a broad range of topics that highlight
the use of educational technology, including but not limited to the following:
* Online, hybrid, blended or other modes of technology enhanced learning *
Distance learning including mobile learning * E-learning and ubiquitous
learning * Student success factors in online learning * E-portfolios and other
online assessment tools * Technology implementation and services in learner
centered environments * Emerging technologies for teaching and learning (blogs,
wikis, podcasts, etc) * Creating and delivering multimedia including learning
objects * Building and sustaining learning communities * Student orientation
and preparation * Open content and open source * Accessibility for persons with
disabilities * Global learning and international education * Professional
development for faculty and staff * Gender equity, the Digital Divide, and open
access * Online student services (tutoring, advising, payments, etc) *
Technology use to enhance communication and collaboration * Institutional
planning and change catalyzed by technology advances * Educational technology
use in Asia & the Pacific, Europe, South America, and Africa. For details
regarding papers and general session presentations, see:

- The Curriculum, Technology, and Education Reform (CTER) Online
Master of Education Program from the University of Illinois will feature a
hybrid conference live from the University of Illinois in
Champaign and through the IOC community,
http://www.ilonlineconf.org. The
conference will be held February 14-16, 2007. Featured speakers include
Tony Bates, Margaret Maag, Chip Banks and Jonathan Finkelstein. Presenters and
participants online will be given access to both the IOC and CTER conferences.
This conference - which is attended by participants from all across the globe -
is held entirely on the Internet using: live virtual classrooms, recorded
presentations, email, web poster sessions, synchronous chats, discussion areas,
and other Internet technologies. IOC was created to focus on issues and
concerns of K-20 classroom faculty and related technology support, learning
resources, student services, and workforce development professionals. IOC 2007
takes place in a LearningTimes Online Conference Community - an online
environment in which groups of participants, both small and large, gather
electronically to learn, collaborate and network. Not sure how an online
conference works? Want to experience the conference community before
registering? Highlights from last year's conference are available at:

- February 2, 2007 - Connectivism: Learning Conceptualized
Through the Lens of Today's World By George Siemens Knowledge and
learning are forefront in the progress and advancement of humanity. At no other
time in history have we stood before as rich a panorama of opportunity as we do
today. Our access to information, knowledge, global conversation, research, and
the experiences of generations past provide a firm foundation on which to build
the society of tomorrow. Yet openness, abundance, and access raise new
concerns. The ability to cope with today's knowledge deluge, to engage learners
in co-creation of content, and to enlarge classroom walls to include diverse
perspectives requires a new conception of learning. Theories of cognition and
learning that have served well in the past seem frail, ineffective, and out of
touch with the reality of learners and the new context and characteristics of
knowledge today.
- February 5, 2007 - Connective Teaching: How the
Read/Write Web Challenges Traditional Practice By Will Richardson In the
traditional information delivery model of instruction, teachers were seen
primarily as content experts who were charged with making sure their students
"learned" a certain set of knowledge. This model was built inherently on the
idea that knowledge and information were scarce and that if students weren't
exposed to it in school they would be unlikely to learn it elsewhere. Today,
however, knowledge and information are abundant and fast changing. In this
environment, the emphasis of our teaching must shift away from content to
instead focus on helping students build their own networks of trusted sources
through which they can find and evaluate relevant content on their own. But
what does this shift mean for our own personal and professional practice? Can
we guide our students to be independent, lifelong, connected learners without
first building our own communities and trusted networks for learning? And how
can we best model for our students the effective and ethical use of a connected
world in our own lives? This presentation examines some of the ways in which
expectations for professional practice are changing to reflect this new
learning environment and looks at the challenges to implementing those changes.
- February 6, 2007 - Balancing Agility and Stability in
Higher Education By Diana Oblinger Information technology has catalyzed
the creation of new forms of communication, self-expression, and collaboration.
Social networking, podcasting, and videoblogging exemplify a do-it-yourself
culture where peer-to-peer, multi-modal communication challenges traditional
text-based, authoritative channels. The co-creation of material and the
emergence of amateurs as authorities, as epitomized by wikipedia, signal a
cultural shift among many of todays learners. And, with the Web as
learners information universenot the libraryno learner is
ever far from abundant information. In a rapidly changing environment, how well
is education keeping pace with learner expectations, IT capabilities, learning
principles, and cultural shifts? How much agilityor stabilityis
required?
- February 7, 2007 A Challenge To Connectivism By Bill
Kerr "The skin is not all that important as a boundary" BF Skinner The
notorious Skinner got that one right. The boundary issue is crucial. In
considering the learning process we need to ask: What happens inside our body /
brain, what happens outside, in the external environment, and how are the
inside and the outside connected? What is the mind, where is it and how does it
work? These are core theoretical questions about learning with immense
practical significance. The necessary process of formulating a new learning
theory ought to incorporate and struggle with a modern synthesis of philosophy,
cognitive science (including artifical intelligence research) and the history
of learning theory. My critique of George Siemen's Connectivism suggests that a
better job could have been done.
- February 8, 2007 - The Recognition Factor By Stephen
Downes Connective knowledge is based on pattern recognition of emergent
phenomena in networks. In order for a pattern to have any meaning, therefore,
it must be recognized. This means that knowledge formation in a connective
environment is a combination of two elements: the perception, which is the
pattern to be recognized, and the perceiver, who does the recognizing.
Knowledge, therefore, is not uniquely inherent in a network, but exists only
insofar as it is recognized to exist. This talk will explore this argument and
its implications on a theory of connective knowledge.
- February 9, 2007 - Research and Net Pedagogies By
Terry Anderson The development of any new pedagogical theory or practice
depends upon high quality
